Pocket fruits

I like fruits. They are tasty, refreshing, and good for you. But there are some fruits that have advantages over others, and one of these advantages is their pocketness.

The pocketness of a fruit measures how easy is it to carry one fruit from one side to another, and by that I mean if you can just throw it into a pocket and enjoy it some time later. Some of the factors that affect the pocketness of a fruit are the following:

  • Hardness: fruits that are too soft might get squished and juice over your clothes/ belongings. Ideally you want fruits that are slightly hard
  • Size: fruits should be small enough to be able to fit them inside a pocket, a watermelon won’t get squished, but it’s not something you can carry effortlessly
  • Eating utensils: the purpose of a pocket fruit is to be capable to eat it on the go, ideally with nothing other than your hands and teeth
  • Residue: fruits that are consumed fully are better than those that leave something behind, be it a peel or a seed

There are a few fruits that live in the sweetspot where these four conditions are satisfied, and because of that you can consider them optimal pocket fruits. Some examples of these are apples (you can eat the core completely thus being zero residue), pears, kiwis (you can eat the fur, it gives you more fiber and becomes zero residue), some tomatoes (mainly cherry, but in general, if they are not too watery then they can resist being squished quite well), carrots (not really a fruit but make a good snack and are a perfect example of pocket fruits/ vegetables). On the border of optimal pocketness we can find stuff such as grapes (a bit to squishy, raisins solve this issue though), berries (also a bit too squishy), bell pepper (not a fruit, quite big and quite fragile, even if it normally doesn’t juice much when squished) or cucumbers (a bit too big, but smaller ones could even be optimal).

I also enjoy pushing the borders a bit and try to convert non-pocket fruits into pocket fruits by eating the cores or peels of fruits, it makes me feel responsible somehow. But without doing any modifications, pears are perhaps the optimal pocket fruit, and carrots the optimal pocket vegetable. Another optimal pocket snack is nuts of almost any type (hazelnuts, almonds, nuts, pecans, peeled peanuts, etc.)
